Beetje idioot dat ze geen storingsdiensten draaien voor een site die zo gammel is.

Hij ligt er zo vaak uit dat het al een beschamende vertoning is, en dat dan ook nog zonder knappe monitoring en reponsetijden.

 

Als ik dit bij een klant zou presteren, kon ik op zoek naar een andere baan

 

Ze laten zo wel erg zien dat het een stelletje hobbyisten is inplaats van een bedrijf.

Denk dat het hele serverpark eruit ligt, geen DNS resolve maar ook geen directe ping naar hun IP...

Is aardig wat loos daar, of een super onderhouds/update beurt.

 

Of gewoon de rekening niet betaald?

Geocaching.com is down. Internap power outage - a fire at Fisher Plaza. Machines are fine but no power to the building.

 

Geocaching.com servers are hosted at the Fisher Plaza building near the Space Needle. http://www.fisherplaza.com is down too

 

Someone at the scene said 6 inches of water in the basement from putting out the fire. Both generators are there.

 

No ETA when the power is back on. People are hand carrying critical servers out of the building.

 

OH "They said they'd be ecstatic if the power is back on by 6 tonight" - Geocaching.com likely to be down all day.

 

Fire at Fisher Plaza was put out hours ago. They're now dealing with a melted generator and flood damage from putting out the fire

Ben over ongeveer een maand daar in de buurt. Zal ff langs gaan als de problemen nog niet zijn opgelost.

Natuurlijk hebben ze een storingsdienst. Elias en Jeremy worden af en toe uit hun bed gehaald om problemen op te lossen. Meestal is dat op softwarenivo, dan moet er iets gereboot worden of iets dergelijks.

 

In dit geval is Jeremy sinds 04:00 lokale tijd ter plaats, want het gebouw waarin de servers liggen werd slachtoffer van een brand. Kan ook bij jouw bedrijf gebeuren. Het gaat toch om zijn bedrijf en die van zijn partners; het gaat ook waarschijnlijk om de "college fund" van zijn kinderen. Om die mensen als "stelletje hobbyisten" te behandelen is wel erg makkelijk, maar de hobbyisten, dat zijn wij, Geocaching is onze hobby, het is hun leven.

 

Dat de telefoonnummer van het bureau op "out of office" staat is gewoon normaal. 4 juli is een feestdag maar valt op een zaterdag. In dergelijke gevallen krijgen de Amerikanen de dag daarvoor of daarna als compensatie. Met hun jaarlijkse betaalde vakantie die rond de 10 (tien) dagen ligt, gun ik ze die extra dag heel graag. Dus, donderdagavond, antwoordapparaat aangezet, en dat er geen klantenservice op een dag dat ook voor 90% van de Amerikaanse bevolking een feestdag is, da's toch niet zo slecht. Het gaat om tupperdoosjes zoeken, dit is geen eerstehulpafdeling voor hartinfarcten. (Overigens: hoeveel andere Internetbedrijven ken je, waarvan de telefoonnummer gewoon op Internet te vinden is? Wel eens geprobeerd met Google of Microsoft of Amazon gewoon te bellen meet een klein vraagje?)

 

Maar dat alles betekent natuurlijk niet dat iedereen op het strand ligt, dat ze misschien maandag gaan kijken of ze de servers weer op gaan starten. Ik kan garanderen dat de weekendplannen van meerdere mensen te Seattle bijna letterlijk in de fik staan, en niet alleen omdat ze met cachegegevens van vorige week zullen moeten gaan cachen.

I send everybody and especially Jeremy @ the Fisher Plaza my very best wishes. I'll hope that they will be up and running soon but I'm glad to hear that there are no injuries are fallen. That's the most importend thing for now!

Indeed we are just people to like findig a plastic box with a logbook in it. For them it is there work and income and maybe there future.

I've just had it officially confirmed that there is a power outage affecting the whole building where the servers are located. So it's not a Groundspeak equipment issue, but one involving multiple companies. The problem is being worked on at the moment.

 

It's a case of No Power, means No Servers, which means No Site.

 

 

Well, that could have been quickly eliminated as a cause by noting that neither the geocaching.com nor groundspeak.com domain names are resolving to an address. So the problem is at a level well beyond "a web site being hacked".

 

My information (as unreliable as anyone else's) is that there was a fire which has affected the electrical supply of the building in which Groundspeak's servers are just one of many, many companies which are "colocated". So the building has no power (but apparently the server rooms were not affected). You can bet that a lot of people who are way more influential than Groundspeak will be "encouraging" the local utility people to get this fixed very quickly.

 

It would be interesting to see (not that I imagine we will ever find out) whether anybody's insurance pays for resulting financial losses. Groundspeak's will probably be fairly minimal, but if you're selling stuff online, a few hours of downtime can be big bucks in lost revenue.

 

Not the greatest time for it to happen, though: any Friday is bad enough as people plan their weekend, but also it's the Fourth of July holiday tomorrow. I suppose it could have been even worse if that had fallen on a Monday.

The largest impact has been downtime at the payment portal Authorize.net, which has been offline for hours, meaning that its merchants have been unable to process credit card payments through their web sites.

zaterdagavond laat zal een backupfaciliteit gaan draaien, er wordt niet specifiek naar gc verwezen maar naar het data-centre in seattle waar ook gc haar server heeft staan.
