De amerikanen hebben grootse plannen met het GPS systeem. Het signaal wordt voor militairen 8 maal sterker en moet in 2006 operationeel zijn. Voor ons (gewone burgers) veranderd en voorlopig niets. Meer info: CNN

Zo zie je maar hoe een Europees besluit - het Galileo GPS-systeem bouwen - al direct gevolgen heeft. Net nu compatibiliteit is bereikt met USA GPS over frequenties, signaalsterkte en transmissieschema, staat alles weer op losse schroeven.

Voor zover ik weet zijn er al enige tijd plannen voor een flinke upgrade van het GPS systeem.

Boeing Space and Communications has received approval from the U.S. Air Force to proceed with space vehicle production for the GPS IIF Modernization program. 

The added capabilities include new signals for civilian users at the L2 and L5 frequencies and new, secure operational M-codes for military users. 

 

GPS IIF is expected to launch on the Air Force’s Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle and provide 20 percent more on-orbit life than previous GPS spacecraft, according to Mike Rizzo, director of navigation systems for Boeing Space and Communications.

 

Designed for flexibility and growth, the GPS IIF system architecture is designed to accommodate hardware and software changes through incremental technology upgrades that can improve efficiency and introduce new military capabilities, says Rizzo.

 

Enhancements include anti-jam, greater accuracy, better availability and higher integrity. Program sponsors hope the IIF incremental upgrade approach will in turn reduce the technical risks inherent in developing GPS III, the next generation system.

 

The Boeing-led control segment team that includes Lockheed Martin and Computer Science Corporation will also play a key role in the modernization of the entire GPS ground system architecture design to reduce operator workload and operational costs.
